Correctional services can be measured in different ways: Statistics canada: rates of youth in the system (10,000) youth population aged 12-17 and by the number of youth in the correctional system. Counts: indication of how many youth are in the system on any one day or month. This tells us about the capacity and use of the institutional system and probation officials for administration. Admissions: number of youth who have gone through the system in any one year. It is measuring how many youth are moving through custody, receiving programs and experiencing the system. Correctional rates: can be compared with crime rates to understand how they are sanctioned or compare changes between jurisdictions. Remand: admission rates increase with age and are highest for boys at age 17 and they account for more than three quarters. (this is also found for aboriginal youth, especially girls) Custody is expensive; average of 80,000 a year to keep a youth in custody.
