Leadership = the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals: source of this influence may be formal (high position) or not. Non-sanctioned leadership = ability to influence that arises outside the formal structure of an organization; just as important as formal influence. 2 major tasks of leaders managing others to get day-to-day tasks done & inspiring others to do the extraordinary. Proposes that personal qualities/characteristics differentiate leaders from non-leaders. Not very useful until matched with big 5 personality framework.
