Perception: process in which individuals organize and interpret their impressions to give meaning to environment: perception can be very diferent from objective reality. People"s behaviour based on perception of what reality is not reality itself. Factors afecting perception reside in perceiver/object/target being perceived or in context of situation. The perceiver: interpretation is heavily inluenced by perceiver"s personal characteristics. Personal characteristics include: person"s attitudes, personality, motives, interests, past experiences, expectations. The target: target"s characteristics afect what is perceived. Loud people noticed more in group than quiet people: novelty, motion, sounds, size shape way we see target, targets aren"t looked at in isolation relationship of target to background inluences perception. The situation: context is very important when we see objects/events. Techniques allow us to make accurate perceptions rapidly and provide valid data for predictions not foolproof. Distinctiveness: refers to whether individual acts similarly across variety of situations. Consensus: if everyone faced with similar situation responds in same way, the behaviour shows consensus.
