Document Summary

Measuring unemployment is the job of statistics canada. A person is unemployed if he or she is on temporary layoff or is looking for a job. A person is considered employed if he or she spent some of the previous week working at a paid job. A person who fits neither category, such as a full-time student, homemaker, or retiree, is not in the labour force. Labour force: the total number of workers, including both the employed and the unemployed: labour force = number of employed + number of unemployed. Unemployment rate: the percentage of the labour force that is unemployed: unemployment rate = number of unemployed x100. Labour-force participation rate: the percentage of the adult population that is in the labour force: labour-force participation rate = labour force x100. Because people move in and out of the labour force so often and for such a variety of reasons, statistics on unemployment can be difficult to interpret.
