Grounded in the ability to understand how groups develop and function. Interaction between two people is quite different from a three-person discussion. Ideal size for problem solving group is 5-7 members. Better to have odd number of people to avoid ties in decision making. Groups of larger than 7 tend to be broken into subgroups; talkative members may dominate or drown out quiet members. A group member raises a controversial issue everyone starts talking at once. Group listens intently to a member explain an important concept or describe a possible solution to a problem. Use humour to diffuse tension and ease strain. Group interaction: a necessity for effective group communication in both face-to- face and virtual meetings.
