Chapter 17 -life cycle nutrition: infancy, childhood, adolescence. Dramatic grow/nutritional uptake/feeding is high within first year by tripling the weight of the baby. Adequacy within 50th percentile does not mean its only healthy percentile. Height & weight used for assessment **some reliance - sometimes there are times when height may get taller than weight or weighting more than the height within growth. Birth weight double by ~5months triple by 1yr. Energy: 2x more needed than adult infants take 100kcal/kg adults take 40kcal/kg. **infants have fast respiration & circulation than adults providing more metabolic rate. Total energy requirement: healthy infants around 1st 6months should take breast milk/formula & around 2nd 6months with intake of solid foods & breast milk. Protein: requires slow intake to prevent liver & kidney stress for the infants & support rapid growth of early infancy. Fat provides most of the energy in breast milk & standard infant formula.
