Lot"s of money from every country is spent on science and technology (2-3%, in the billions) Technology has changed science warfare more dangerous, computerization, telecommunications, modern pharmaceuticals (kill but also create disease) Good and bad side: computers are fun but create unemployment, take antibiotics but has started evolution of super-bugs. Science is always the product of human activity. Science: most effective way of understanding natural world (experimenting and theorizing) Technology: body of skills and knowledge by which we control and modify the world (ex. Britain conquered many countries via the technology of shipbuilding and navigation) R&d: all activity related to developing new scientific knowledge and new products/processes, it measures effort being put into sci/tech in a country. Although most work has been done after ww2, it began centuries before (plato) Francis bacon: 1527, british lawyer and thinker first try to outline relationship in sci/tech through book. It took centuries for events to catch up with bacon"s vision: introduction.
