William james studied the evolved functions of our thoughts and feelings. Using charles darwin as an inspiration james assumed thinking developed due to evolution and adaptation (via survival) James went onto write the brilliant and elegant principles of psychology that introduced the concepts of psychology to the educated public. A functionalist looks at the bigger picture of things and its function.
