Chapter 5 physical development: birth, motor skills, and growth. 38 weeks is the due date of the baby. The first delivery can last around 16 hours, longer for the first than the following deliveries. The fetus initiates the birth process by secreting chemicals. Uterus 10 cm dilated (stage 1) is when you would start pushing the baby out. Once the baby passes through the cervix (stage 2) and is out you also have to deliver the placenta (stage 3) and examine it to make sure nothing is wrong. Western society treats pregnancy as an illness regular doctor visits, birth in hospital, drugs for pain relief. Other cultures view pregnancy as an everyday occurrence follows natural model where there is little, if any, medical interventions and employs alternative pain relief. Apgar exam: focusses on 5 vital functions (heart rate, respiration, muscle tone, pain response, and skin colour).
