Effects vary by the age and the gender of the child
Boys have harder time with divorce because girls talk more about their emotions. Girls have harder
times with step parents (esp step mother). Boys live with their mom, lose their make role model. If parents
remarry; girls have harder time adjust to dad remarrying. Older kids have harder time adjusting – they
understand it what’s happening. Young child have more behavioural issues.
Determinants of the effects include
Negative outcomes are often evident prior to parental divorce
Child’s experiences following the divorce
Change of the family’s economic situation
Commitment and effectiveness of the custodial and the non-custodial parent
Remarriage of one or both parents
Change in school and residence
Time for most separation: toddler age (when they’re babies, you don’t have to discipline, and see if on
same page). Puberty, right after birth (after 3-4 months of infant)
