Document Summary
The sixth of erikson"s eight stages of development. Adults seek someone with whom to share their lives in an enduring and self-sacri cing commitment. Without such commitment, they risk profound loneliness and isolation. All intimate relationships (friendship, family, romance) have much in common in both the psychic needs they satisfy and in the behaviours they require. Linked lives: when the success, health, and well-being of each family member are connected to those of other members (at all stages) Ie. children are affected by their parents" relationship, even through they are not directly involved. Emerging adults either live with their parents or communicate with them regularly. Helicopter parent: label used for parents who hover over their emerging adult children. Friendship: as emerging adults are entering different types of worlds, they have more friends at this time of life than at any other period, they also reach their pear of functional signi cance.
