A social researcher"s rst priority is to ensure that the people being studied will not be harmed. Prevention of harm should override any other goal, including the acquisition of knowledge. Most research must comply with the tcps2. Sociologists in canada are encouraged to follow the code of ethics of the canadian. Research is also subject to the law. Before a research project involving human subjects begins, a research ethics board rep must review and approve it. May approve, request modi cation be made to it, or rejected. Must avoid con icts of interest (having nancial stake in a research project they are reviewing) More dif cult to get an approval for quantitative research than for qualitative. The tcps2 outlines three core principles for the conduct of research involving human subjects: Subjects must give free, informed and ongoing consent (most of the time they are given an information sheet with the names of people in charge and their contact info)
