1. 1: from speculation to science: how psychology developed. Psychology"s intellectual parents were classic philosophy & 19th century philosophy & physiology, disciplines that shared an interest in the mysteries of the mind. Classic greek philosophers, such as socrates & aristotle, considered issues such as mind-body & the nature of memory. Later philosophers, descartes, hume, & mill, speculated on the mind & emotions. Physiologists, such as gall, broca, & m ller, demonstrated the value of an empirical support. Empiricism: the precise that knowledge should be acquired through observation. Psyche = soul, logos = study of subject. A new science is born: the contributions of wundt & hall. Psychology became an independent discipline when wilhelm wundt established the first psychological research lab in 1879 in liepzig, germany. He defined psychology as the scientific study of consciousness. G. stanley hall launched america"s first psychology journal & helped launch establish the american.
