Document Summary
Motives: needs, wants, interests and desires that propel people in certain directions. Theoretical approaches to motivation: drive theory: an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce tension. Homeostasis: a state of physiological equilibrium or stability. Motivated to pursue actions that will lead to drive reduction. Internal tension push in direction: incentive theory: external goal that has the capacity to motivate behavior. Emphasizes environmental factors and downplays biological bases of human motivation. Expectancy-value models: 1) expectancy about one"s chances of attaining the incentive and 2) the value of the desired incentive: evolutionary theories. Natural selection favors behaviors that maximize reproductive success. Experience of hunger is controlled in the brain; the hypothalamus. They thought lateral hypothalamus (lh) and the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (vmh) were the brain"s on-off switches for the control of hunger.
