A changing era in the lives of people with disabilities: doctors: to separate the sick from the healthy (ex: diabetic vs. non-diabetic, psychologists: to identify and provide services to those with learning, behavioral, or physical differences (ex: autistic) Sociologists; to identify those that do not follow society"s expectations (ex: sociopaths) Why label people: disorder: a general abnormality in physical, psychological, or mental functioning (this is the broadest term) Labels can be both positive or negative, and tells us whether an individual meets the expectations of a culture: they are based on perception, not facts. It will help identify an individual who require special care or assistance. In a positive way, it will help prevent that individual from being bullied by a class bully if the individual is labelled as having an intellectual disability. In a negative way, however, the child with the intellectual disability may be discriminated.
