In depth interviews revealed that symptoms associated with mot luuk (uterus) had a substantial impact on: their health seeking behaviour: medication use, sexual relations, state of mind. Psychological fear that symptoms would progress to life threatening sickness. Mot luuk problems perceived as occurring because of past events: childbirth, not staying by the fire long enough after childbirth to dry the uterus. Feared symptoms could turn into worse of diseases: aids e. t. c, worst fear was that it would become cervical cancer. They perceive cervical cancer to be much more common than it actually is, a bad result of awareness campaigns. Idioms of distress: somatic complaints in a local context. Women occasionally spoke of mot luuk pains in terms of woman"s difficutly in life: their hard work and sacrifices for the family causing the pain e. t. c, social position playing a role.
