In photosynthesis, light energy is used to extract electrons fro water which combine w/ hydrogen to reduce carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. A major by product of photosynthesis is oxygen, a molecule needed for the most common type of cellular respiration. An electron that is farther away from the nucleus contains more energy than an electron that is more closely held by the nucleus. And as an electron moves closer to the nucleus of an atom it loses energy; as it moves away it gains energy.
