EESA06H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Epicenter, Seismic Refraction, Seismic Wave
Document Summary
Chapter 4- the earth"s interior: the only rocks that geoscientists can study directly in place are those of the earth"s crust. Crust is but a thin skin of rock, making up less than 1% of earth"s total volume: mantle rocks brought to the earth"s surface in basalt flows, in diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes. The crust & the upper core mantle can be conveniently divided into the brittle lithosphere and the plastic asthenosphere: deep parts of the earth are studied indirectly, largely through the branch of geology called. Geophysics, which is the application of physical laws and principles to a study of the earth. Geophysics includes the study of seismic waves and earth"s magnetic field, gravity & heat. Reflected waves are recorded on a seismogram shows the amount of time it took the waves to travel down to the boundary, reflect off and return to surface. Then geoscientists calculate the depth of the boundary.
