Document Summary

Public goods, private goods: the american struggle over educational goals. In his article, labaree argues that the main issue with america"s education system is political. He states that the problem lies with which values and interests are prioritized, and tensions are concerned with achieving status through credentials rather than actually obtaining knowledge through the pursuit of education. The argument is credible because it draws on historical references that allude to these three approaches implemented within the american education system. Examples that are used include the whig leaders" democratic equality approach in the mid- nineteenth century, and how citizenship training became an essential priority in america during this time. Social efficiency, however, became more prominent in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through the influence of business and labor stakeholders. An example of this would be the jobs commission"s influence that encouraged michigan"s governor to fund job training over adult education in 1996.
