Symbolic interactionism explains social phenomena from the perspective of its participants and so is a micro behaviour on a smaller scale than functionalism. Interactionists are interested in looking at how people interact w/ each other at dif. For them, all encounters w/ others are what creates both meaning and significance. Described by bury (1982) as biographical distribution in w/c the experience of illnes disruptive to the life experience of the sufferer.
