Bryman chapter 8 the nature of qualitative research. Inductive: view of the relationship between theory and research, start with field research then develop theories and concepts from it. Interpretivist: seeks to understand the social world through other peoples interpretations of it. Constructionist: understand social life to be an outcome of the interactions and negotiations between individuals vs. a fixed structure to which individuals conform and adapt. Naturalistic: try to minimize the disturbance they cause to the social worlds they study. Inductive - using particular examples to reach a general conclusion about something. Naturalistic - derived from real life or nature, or imitating very closely. Ethnography/participant observation: research immersed in social setting for some time, observe and listen to gain appreciation of culture. Qualitative interviewing: in depth, semi structured or unstructured interviewing. Focus groups: several people interviewed together, using semi-structured format. Language based approaches: ex. discourse and conversation analysis. Qualitative studies often use a multi-method approach.
