Neurons: sense changes in the environment, communicate these changes to other neurons and command the body"s responses to these sensations. Glia or glial cells: insulting, supporting and nourishing neighboring neurons (like glue) To observe brain tissue using a microscope- make thin slices (brain is not firm so use formaldehyde to harden it) use microtome to cut these slices. Histology: the microscopic study of the structure of tissues. Enables histologist to study the arrangement or cytoarchitecture (arrangement of neurons) of neurons in different parts of the brain. New method of staining by camillo golgi soak brain tissue in silver chromate makes neurons become darkly colored in their entirety reveal that neuronal cell body is a small part of the neuron. Showed that the neuron has two distinguishable parts: a central region that contains the cell nucleus, numerous thin tubes that radiate away from the central region. Cell body: swollen reigon containg cell nucleus.
