Chapter 1 neuroscience: past, present and future. Neuroscience was founded recently 1970- study of the brain is as old as science. Neuroscience revolution occurred when scientist realized that the best hope for understanding he workings of the brain would come from an interdisciplinary approach (combination of traditional approaches to yield new synthesis, a new perspective) Trepanation: process in which the boring of holes on the skull with the aim to cure (use to treat headaches or mental disorders- giving evil spirits an escape route)- surgical procedure done 7000 years ago in other hominids. Thought the heart was the seed of the soul and repository of memories: wasn"t seriously challenged until the time of hippocrates. Hippocrates: believed that the brain was the seat of intelligence and involved in sensation father of western medicine. Aristotle: hung to the belief that the heart was the center of intellect- brain was a radiator for cooling blood that was overheated by the seething heart.
