Document Summary

Addiction involves action-selection processes in the dorsal striatum, which mediates habitual actions. Lack of input to the striatum can result in over-reliance on these habit processes in the striatum. Cie = chronic intermittent ethanol exposure and withdrawal. Hypothesis: addiction involves a shift in activity from goal-directed behaviour to habitual behaviour. Dorsal medial striatum (dms) controls goal-directed behaviour and competes with dorsolateral striatum (dls) for action, which houses habitual control. Habitual drug-seeking behaviours involve activity in the dls. Strengthening dls/disrupting dms may lead to drug dependence, an over-reliance on habitual action. Hypothesis: habitual control dominates decision-making due to impaired goal-direction. This may be due to changes in corticostriatal circuits, though we have limited information of this contribution towards habit formation in drug dependence. Goal of research paper: investigate whether drug dependence disrupts goal-directed control of decision-making. Chronic intermittent ethanol exposure (cie) and withdrawal used to create alcohol dependence.
