POLA02H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter Violence and Natural Resources: Environmental Degradation, Bougainville Copper, Class Conflict
Document Summary
Natural resources rend to influence civil wars. The role played in natural resources depends largely on its lootability, and to a lesser extend on its obstructability and its legality. Hypothesis 1 the more lootable a resource is, the more likely it is to benefit local peoples and the poor. Hypothesis 2 the more unlootable a resource is, the more likely it will lead to separatist conflicts. Hypothesis 3 the more lootable a resource is, the more likely it is to benefit a rebel group; the more unlootable it is, the more likely it is to benefit the government. Hypothesis 4 the more lootable the resource, the more likely it is to create discipline problems inside the army that controls it. Hypothesis 5 the more lootable a resource, the more likely it is to prolong nonseparatist conflicts. Hypothesis 6 if a resource is obstructable, it is more likely to increase the duration and intensity of conflicts.
