PSYA01H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4 (p.2): Basilar Membrane, Incus, Auditory Cortex
Document Summary
Function of ear is to gather sound waves, hearing is to extract some sort of meaning from those waves. Amplitude of sound wave determines its loudness; high amp is loud, low amp are quiets. Divided into outer, middle, and inner regions most noticeable part of ear is the pinea (outer region that helps channel sound waves to the ear and allows to determine the source/location of a sound) Auditory canal extends from pinea to eardrum soundwaves hitting eardrum cause it to vibrate. Middle ear consists of 3 bones called ossicles: malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup) any movement in eardrum comes as a result of these bones moving (as they are connected to it) Ossicles attach to inner ear structure called the cochlea(a fluid-filled membrane that is coiled in a snail-lie shape and contains the structures that convert sound into neural impulses) converting sound vib.
