Document Summary

Module 4. 1 sensation and perception at a glance pg . The process of translating the world into meaningful experiences occurs in two stages: sensation: the process of detecting external events by sense organs and turning those stimuli into neural signals. Perception: involves attending to, organizing, and interpreting stimuli that we sense. Includes recognizing the sounds as a human voice and understanding that certain colour, shapes, and motion together make up an image of a human being walking towards you. ~the raw sensations detected by the sensory organs are turned into information that the brain can process through transduction. Transduction: when specialized receptors transform the physical energy of the outside world in neural impulses. These impulses travel to the brain and influence the activity of different structures. ~the transduction of sound takes place in a specialized structure called the cochlea, where sound energy is converted into neural impulses that travel to the hearing centres of the brain.
