Module 1. 1: the science of psychology: psychology: the scientific study of behaviour, thought, & experience, & how they can be affected by physical, mental, social, & environmental factors, goals of psychology include to understand how: Diff. brain structures work together to produce our behaviour. Nature (genetics) & nurture (upbringing & environment) interact to make us who we are. Feelings of control can influence happiness & health. Each of these factors can influence our well-being & could contribute to psychological disorders. Previous experiences influence how we think & act: every topic in psych can be examined from a biological, cognitive (thinking), or sociocultural perspective. The scientific method: scientific method: a way of learning about the world through collecting observations, developing theories to explain them, & using the theories to make predictions; involves an interaction b/w hypothesis testing & the construction of theories. Once tested, hypotheses are either confirmed or rejected. Confirmed hypotheses lead to new ones & strengthen theories.
