Developmental psychology: the study of human physical, cognitive, and behavioural characteristics. Longitudinal design: follows the development of the same set of individuals through time: following a single group is costly and time-consuming, suffers from attrition: when participants drop out of the study. Interaction between genetics and environment constantly shaping developmental process. Certain times in development when individuals are sensitive to stimulation that facilitates psychological, neurological, behavioural, and cognitive development: change happens fast when ready for it. Sperm finds way into ovum and releases chemical preventing other sperm from entering. Zygote: initial cell formed when the nuclei of egg and sperm fuse. Outer group: placenta; pass oxygen, nutrients and expel waste. Embryonic stage: weeks two through eight, during the embryo begins developing major physical structures such as heart and nervous system, as well as beginning of arms, legs, hands, and feet.
