Can suffer from cohort effects: differences between people that result from being born in different time periods. Eg: differences in between born in 1970s/1990s of nutrition, cultural changes, medical advances: longitudinal design: development of same set of individuals through time (eg: compare infants) Fixes problem of cohort effects, but following a single group of people for a long period of time costly & time consuming. Suffer from attrition: participants drop out of a study for different reasons. Sensitive period: window of time during which exposure to a specific type of environmental stimulation is needed for normal development of a specific ability. Younger individuals quicker to adapt to new culture. Germinal (0-2 weeks)-blastocyst from fallopian tubes migrate to uterus. Cellular divisions occur (nervous system, skin tissues, multiple organs) Embryo begins developing major structures emerge (head, heart, hands, feet, limbs)
