Document Summary
Person may believe they are simply experiencing a normal feeling (i. e. sadness, stress) rather than having a mental illness (i. e. depression, anxiety) thus they do not seek help. People motivated to not see themselves as mentally ill so they minimalize their symptoms making themselves think they are healthier than they are. Individuals do not seek help because they don"t think it"s helpful. Common barrier to psychological treatment is stigma toward mental illness and process of therapy. Long stigma leading to discrimination in the workplace, school, etc. and being treated differently by social groups. Extra pressures on men to avoid treatment because needing help and going to therapy make them look weak and dependent. Leads to people denying that they have problems to begin with to avoid looking weak and vulnerable. Different types of treatments have different costs which are generally high making it difficult for those who can not afford it to seek help.
