Personality: characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual, and remains relatively consistent over time and situation. Idiographic approach: creating detailed descriptions of a specific person"s unique personality characteristics. Helpful for understanding the self and others, and also applied to full range of human experiences. Nomothetic approach: examines personality in large groups of people, with the aim of making generalizations about personality structure. Allows to examine what types of people are more/less likely to engage in a certain behaviour. Identifies important personality traits in a particular demographic. Personality trait: a person"s habitual patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Short-cut summaries as to how a person would behave most of the time. Allport created about 18 000 english words to describe different personality traits. Believing a personality profile accurately describes you even when patently false. Explains why so many people believe horoscopes, astrologers, psychics, etc.
