Receptors in the body respond to the increased concentrations of these compounds as well as to lower water volume and send messages to the brain. The result: the sudden awareness that you are thirsty, which motivates you to drink water. Motivation is essential to an individual"s survival because at its most basic level it contributes to homeostasis the body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal state in response to the outer environment. Allostasis motivation is not only inluenced by current needs, but also by the anticipation of future needs. Hunger is not simply a homeostatic mechanism. The need to consume enough nutrients so that you have enough energy to function involves physiological responses as well as more complex cognitive and emotional factors. On and of switches involved in hunger can be found in a few regions of the hypothalamus (a set of nuclei found on the bottom surface of the brain)
