Document Summary
In middle ages, explanation for mental illness shifted from demon possession to physical illness, believing that person was suffering from some health affliction. Their treatment were generally ineffective such as draining up to 40 % of the person blood volume. Some treatment included throwing the person into the pit of snakes. Philippe pinel and dorothea dix changed the mental illness treatment methods. They formed a new approach called moral treatment- which led to patients being treated with kindness and decency, able to roam the hospital halls and get outside for fresh air. Chlorpromazine was introduced and people with schizophrenia and other disorders involving being out of touch with reality were able to function independently, even holding down jobs and living at home with their families. Medical model- sees psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions-as sets of symptoms, causes and outcomes with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms.
