Document Summary

Each year in canada 10% of the population seeks treatment for mental health issues. Women participate in therapy more than men. Asian canadians and native descent least likely to go to therapy. 1600 adults who have been diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorder only 30% were receiving treatment. 2/3 with mental health issues do not seek help. Countries with strong gender norms, extra pressure on men to avoid treatment because contradicts the idea of being strong . Real me, real depression campaign to combat these ideas of men not needing help. Two main barriers to mental health treatment: access, whether people can afford it and if they have the time. Community mental health centres often provide therapy on a sliding scale, changing the cost of sessions based on patients income and insurance status. Some cases people are required to enter the mental health system against their will.
