Document Summary

Many unhealthy behaviours have reinforcing consequences in the short- Maintained because they still have some benefit to the organism ex: smoke cigarettes receive immediate rewards, life-threatening affects appear later in life. Physical fitness our ancestors were probably in better physical shape than most of us are today (due to hunting, gathering, and being nomadic) Peer pressure among adolescents strongly contributes to the acquisition of the smoking habit (imitation when you see others smoking) The media often portray cigarette smokers as young, healthy, attractive, and exciting people -> people smoke because they want to have that lifestyle. Cigarette smoking, like drug use, is also addictive. A person"s nervous system have developed a tolerance to the drug, and the person then becomes physically dependent on it. Tolerance -> the neurons in the cns respond les and less to the presence of the drug; need larger doses to produce the same effects as before.
