Chapter 6: surveys and observations - describing what people do. Survey is usually when people are asked about consumer products but poll is when they"re asked about social or political opinions. In this book, both terms mean a method of posing questions to people on the phone, in personal interviews, on written questionnaires, or online. Open-ended questions let people answer any way they like so you get spontaneous, rich info but categorizing the responses can be hard and time-consuming. Forced-choice format people give opinion by picking the best out of 2 or more options, e. g. asking which of 3 candidates are you more likely to vote for; e. g.
