Chapter 9: social in uence: effects of social in uence due to, social in uence. People have a tendency to associate disproportionately with people who are like them = homophily. Social in uence- many ways people affect one another. Conformity- changing one"s behavior or beliefs in response to some real (or imagined) pressure from others (can be implicit or explicit) Compliance- responding favorable to an explicit request by another person. Obedience- power relationship is unequal and the more powerful person, the authority gure issues a demand rather than a request to which the less powerful person submits: conformity. Automatic mimicry: mindlessly imitate other people"s behavior, particularly strong when people have a need to af liate with others and when others in question are well liked. Informational social in uence- reliance on other people"s comments and actions as an indication of what"s likely to be correct, proper, or effective.
