Social psychologists today generally recognize three primary components of the self the individual self, the relational self, and the collective self. The individual self encompasses a person"s beliefs about his or her unique personal traits, abilities, preferences, tastes, talents, and so forth. The rational self refers to the sense of oneself in specific relationships. The collective refers to a person"s identity as a member of the groups to which he or she belongs. Westerners tend to describe themselves as individualistic whereas easterners describe themselves as collective.
