Social psychologists today generally recognize three primary components of the self the individual self, the relational self and the collective self. Individual self: beliefs about our unique personal traits, abilities, preferences, tastes, talents, and so forth. What you think of yourself as an individual. Relational self: beliefs about our identities in specific relationships. How yourself relates to others, e. g. a boyfriend, a parent. Collective self: beliefs about our identities as members of social groups to which we belong. Reflected self-appraisals: beliefs about what others think of our social selves. Self-appraisal reflecting on the thoughts of others. Different situations are likely to bring to the fore different levels of self-definition. Working self-concept: subset of self-knowledge that is brought to mind in a particular context. It"s like there is a bag and you pick the parts of yourself you know based on who you are with e. g. relational self/ collective self.
