PSYB10H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Egg Tossing, Takers, Cognitive Flexibility
Document Summary
Centrality and importance of groups in human events: no single person can overthrow a government and install another; collective action is required. Group life must offer us some advantages in the struggle for survival: these advantages, however, are not well understood, because different mammalian species have successfully pursued both solitary and group lifestyles. It is also generally maintained that these benefits are so crucial to survival that we have a psychological need to be with others and belong to groups. Interdependence varies along a continuum; therefore, so should whether or not a collection of people is a group this makes sense, because members of a family are more of a real group that are participants in a seminar. Norman triplett is often credited with being the first person to experimentally examine the effect of other people"s presence on human performance.
