PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Experiment, Personality Psychology, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Personality psychology: the scientific study of what makes us who we are. The study of individual differences, identifying similarities and differences among people and how they came to be the way they are. To understand human personality, we need to understand traits, genetics, neuroscience, self and identity, intrapsychic aspects, regulation and motivation, and cognition. The impact of social and environmental factors are felt at multiple levels. Traits: a person"s typical way of thinking, feeling and acting, in various situations, at different times. We might be born with a predisposition to develop certain characteristics, but there are many other characteristics that we develop through socialization with people, and our personal experiences. Ex. how we shake hands, music preference, how we decorate our rooms, our career choices. Genetics: study of how genes and environment affect personality and behavior. Even though many personality variables have a genetic component, all of them have an environmental component too.
