PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Behavioural Genetics, Heritability, Genotype
Document Summary
Genome complete set of genes an organism possesses. Although number of genes humans possess is similar to number estimated for mice and worms, manner in which human genes get decoded into proteins is more variable than in other species. Protein-coding genes only make up 2% of human genome, rest is genetic junk. Behavioural genetics studies have been the most controversial trying to determine degree to which individual differences in personality are caused by genetic and env differences. Field is controversial because it says that genetic differences are responsible for shaping core features of human personality, rather than parental socialization or personal experience. People think this will be used to support particular political agendas e. g. don"t hold people responsible for stealing cars because their genes made them do it. Eugenics notion that we can design the future of human species by fostering the reproduction of people with certain traits and discouraging that of people without the traits; master race.
