Document Summary

Subjective age bias: presence of negative aging stereotypes may account for the fact that most people report that they feel younger than they actually are. Younger subjective age is linked with greater life satisfaction and a host of other positive outcomes. Positive health experiences and greater health satisfaction are linked with lower subjective age. Physical realities of aging are complicated by ageism. Ageism: discrimination against any person, young or old, based on chronological age. The old are usually defined as those who are over the age of 65. The word diversity is well suited to the older population. Old people are more different from one another than are individuals in any other age group. Two major research designs are cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Cross-sectional studies: investigator compares different age groups at the same moment in time on the variable of interest.
