Piaget s cognitive theory of moral development y suggests that child s moral concepts evolve in an unvarying sequence through three stages: pre-moral stage: lasts until age 5. Show little concern or awareness of rules. They don t do things with the intention of winning, but they do things to gain satisfaction by exploring: moral realism: ages 6 to 10. Develop great concern and respect for rules that come from authority. See rules as immutable (unchanging and not to be questioned) Moral absolutism: think that all children think, and behave the same way. Similar rigidity in the way that children approach social interactions ( my mommy says ) Immanent justice: the notion that any deviation from ruled will inevitably result in punishment or retribution. Children evaluate the seriousness of an act solely in terms of its consequences. The evolution of prosocial and altruistic behaviours y prosocial behaviour: voluntary behaviour that is intended to benefit another.
