Requires considering person in typical situations versus maximal situations: psychological assessment, determines cognitive, emotional, personality, and behavioural factors in psychopathological functioning, clinical interviews. Characteristics: different from a casual conversation or a poll, the interviewer pays attention to how the respondent answers/does not answer questions, the paradigm within which an interviewer operates influences type of information sought, how it"s obtained, and how it"s interpreted, clinicians must establish rapport with client, usually under stress, empathy, structured interviews. Most clinicians are not engaged in recommended forms of clinical assessment: too much paperwork, low perceived clinical relevance of certain assessment methods, economic pressures < biggest, limited insurance coverage, restrictions of managed care. Too many problems in clinical assessment: too much unstructured clinical interviews, low reliability and validity of unstructured interviews, very low numbers of clinicians adhere to guidelines, relatively rare use of assessment in formal treatment monitoring by clinicians.
