Operationism: each concept take as its meaning a single observable and measureable observation, each theoretical concept would be nothing more than one particular measurable event, deprived theoretical concepts of their greatest advantage, generality is lost. Theory building case studies: adequate theory must be able to account for commonalities across case studies as well as the distinct and unique elements of a particular case, there should be a close match between theoretical and case descriptions. Qualitative research: similar to case study, focus is on unique and rich experiences of a small group of people who are studied in depth, descriptive accounts with subjective, idiographic emphasis are the focus. The directionality problem: which is the cause, which is effect, correlation does not imply causation, but determining whether two variables correlate may serve to disconfirm certain causal hypotheses, solution to problem, based on idea that causes must precede effects, hypothesized causes are studied before a disorder has developed, simple longitudinal study.
