Every place had its own classification system. There wasn"t an agreement to adopt any system in particular. Apa eventually formed their own classification system called the dsm in 1952. Who had its own list but it only listed the diagnostic categories. Multiaxial classification - each individual is rated on five separate dimensions or axes. 1 - axis i - all diagnostic categories except personality disorders and mental retardation. 2 - axis ii - personality disorders and mental retardation. 3 - axis iii - general medical conditions. 4 - axis iv - psychosocial and environmental problems. 5 - axis v - current level of functioning. Axis i and ii together = abnormal behaviour. More clarity and information on recent findings. Originally made by physicians who applied a medical models to the diagnosis of presumed psychiatric illnesses.
