Pregnancy occurs in three trimesters which are three periods of three months each. The three periods being: 1) zygote 2) embryo 3) fetus. During this time the sperm fertilizes ovum now called zygote. It goes down fallopian tubes and implants in uterus (duh lol) Gradually, tendrils from the zygote penetrate the blood vessels in the uterus and forms physiological dependence with the woman. At 6 mos child is covered in fine downy hair called lanugo, skin is protected by waxy substance called vernix. Embryo: developing organism between the second and eighth week of gestation; the period of the embryo comprises the differentiation of the major physiological structures and systems. Gestation: the carrying of an embryo or fetus during pregnancy.
