Operant extinction if an individual emits a previously reinforced behaviour and that beheaciour is not followed by a reinforcer then that person is less likely to do the same thing again when entering a similar situation. Ceasing reinforcement will lead to the extinction of a behaviour. Extinction is just one of the possible causes of decreases in operant behaviour. Child that swear, parents follow the curse word with an immediate stop that and the swearing will be eliminated. Swearing was eliminated because it was followed by a punisher (reprimand) If the parents responded by making the child pay a dollar for every curse word this would also eliminate swearing removal of child"s allowance contingent on swearing = response-cost punishment.
